Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness
Matthew 5:6 - Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
As Jesus continues His sermon on the mount, He presents another powerful teaching, provoking us to align our hearts with God's will. His statement in verse 6 illustrates the deep yearning for righteousness that every Christian should possess. Jesus says, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled."
This verse describes spiritual longing. Just as we crave food and water to sustain our physical bodies, we are called to desire righteousness—living in the right relationship with God and others. Physical hunger and thirst in this context expresses the passionate and unrelenting need for God's justice, truth, and holiness in our lives.
The promise that follows "for they shall be filled” sustains us in our efforts! We find fulfillment not in the fleeting pleasures of the world, but in a life centered on God's will. The pursuit of righteousness brings peace, purpose, and a deep sense of spiritual contentment.
Are we striving to live according to God's word? Are we consistently seeking His justice and truth? Let this teaching of our Lord encourage us to seek righteousness above all, remembering that our efforts will be known by the one who fills our hearts completely.
