Persecuted For Righteousness’ Sake

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:10)

The Christian life is not always going to be peaceful, at least not in the sense in which the world considers peace. In America, the persecutions we face are minimal and a far cry from what some brethren in other parts of the world experience. If we listened to their stories about weathering the abuses of persecution, we might decide that they have no peace. However, it’s a mistake to assume that persecution and peace cannot be experienced simultaneously.

Jesus is making a powerful point about perseverance here. The Apostle Paul told Timothy that all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution in some way. (2 Timothy 3:12) But the persecution we face ultimately brings a blessing. Those who suffer persecution for righteousness’s sake, theirs is the kingdom of heaven! It’s our unwavering gratitude toward God and our steadfast belief in His promises to the faithful that allow us to stand the test. We must be resolved to endure whatever persecution comes our way.

The Apostle Peter writes, “If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.” (1 Peter 4:14-16)

Maybe you’re enduring some form of persecution for righteousness’ sake as you read this. Let this be a reminder to you that God loves you, He knows your struggles, and He understands your pain. Stand firm. Do not waver. Do not give up. When we endure persecution for Jesus’ sake, the kingdom will be ours.
