Do You Appreciate Scripture?

At the end of the 14th century, John Wycliffe produced the first English translation of the Bible from the Latin Vulgate. His mission was to make the scriptures available to common people who could only read English. However, it was expensive because each copy had to be produced by hand. Since Wycliffe’s target audience couldn’t afford to buy their own copy, they had to rent them out. It’s recorded that people would pay weeks or months worth of their salary to have a copy of God’s word in their possession for just ONE DAY!

The average American has between 4 and 9 copies of the Bible in their home. We can pick it up and read it any time. Imagine having the same desire to read the word as those people did in the 14th century. We often forget how blessed we are. I hope that this little historical fact will motivate you to appreciate the access that you have to scripture and increase the amount of time you spend studying it.
